Video Transcript for Detailed Breakdown of the ICON Trailer Coupler Lock for Cast 2-5/16" Ball Coupler

Hello neighbors and friends Steven here with etrailer.com. Today we're looking at our Icon trailer coupler lock for a cast 2 and 5/16th inch ball coupler. And folks, let me tell you, this is gonna be number one, a nice visual deterrent. Number two, it's gonna be a practical deterrent. So it is constructed of a long lasting durable hardened cast steel. It's got radial fins that come out all around it to protect the embedded lock.

The lock itself is a stainless steel construction. Now this does fit buyer's products, Demco and Wallace forged ball style cast couplers, much like this one here. This is just for demonstration purposes only to give you a visual of the style it fits. I will tell you, you do need to have on this particular one, this up for it to fit inside, but it does fit in there and lock. And this guy just hangs outside whenever it's in use.

So I'll put that back to the side. The whole thing weighs about 22 pounds. And as far as using it, you simply twist off the stainless steel cap, that cap's threaded. It's got no ring there to keep dirt, debris, moisture out. It's solid stainless steel.

It's gonna keep everything out of there. It's gonna be very hard for someone to unpick this lock because it uses a half moon shaped kind of style key with only one side of it engraved or keyed. Put it in. Once you unlock it, you can then pull the pin up, put it over the coupler, put it back down, lock it, put your stainless steel cap back in place, write it all the way and then you're good to go. It has a lifetime warranty, a limited lifetime warranty rather from the manufacturer Icon.

And again, you get four keys. This is gonna be a great alternative for you. Then your traditional disc tumbler locks and all those kind of things because again, this one's not gonna freeze up on you, get gummed up or anything like that. And once again, folks just looking at it, who's gonna want to try to cut it off, right Well folks, it has a nice powder coat finish over an already e-coat that covered all the raw material before they powder coat it. That's gonna also help give it better durability and resist chipping, scratching, and wear and tear as well. Folks, that's gonna wrap it up for a quick look at this icon trailer coupler lock. I'm Steven, thanks for watching.

If you’re running a heavy utility trailer with a Curt, Ram, or etrailer cast 2-5/16-inch coupler, theft is a real concern these days more and more equipment trailers are being targeted when left parked on jobsites or lots. That’s where the ICON AL48DQ lock comes in. I like how it wraps over the coupler and makes it nearly impossible for someone to hook up and pull away quickly. This thing is nearly impossible to break into.

I was impressed when I saw the ICON AL58DQ lock tested against standard tools, the cast steel body barely showed a mark, and the lock core design makes it really tough to tamper with. For a contractor hauling with a Buyers Products cast 2-inch coupler, the real risk isn’t just the trailer, it’s the skid steer, mini-excavator, or tools sitting on it, and I like that this lock was built to protect all of that. I love the weather-sealed cap because jobsite trailers sit out in the rain and dirt, and you need the lock to work every time you hook up. For work crews depending on a cast-style coupler, this lock makes the trailer a much harder target and keeps the expensive gear safe.

I was impressed by how solid the ICON AL38DQ lock feels when it’s in place. I love that it completely covers a Buyers Products or Wallace Forge cast 2-5/16-inch coupler, making it extremely tough for anyone to hook up and drive off. I like the weather-sealed cap too, because it keeps out dirt and water so the lock stays reliable even after sitting outside. The unique key system is designed so it’s harder to pick or copy, which puts it a step above standard coupler locks. For public works crews with service trailers full of tools, or really anyone hauling valuable equipment, this is a smart layer of security to keep the job moving. Just make sure you’ve got a Buyers or Wallace Forge cast coupler, since this lock is custom-fit — and if you run a different coupler style, ICON has plenty of other options to match.

I’ve handled plenty of trailer locks that look strong but don’t hold up once an angle grinder hits them, so I wasn’t sure what to expect when Altor showed up with their ICON lock. Seeing it tested with real power tools changed my mind. The heavy cast steel and fin design force a grinder to fight through layer after layer before it ever gets close to the core. The lock face itself is built to spin under a drill bit, which just wears out the tool instead of the lock. I also like that the keys are made so duplicates can’t be cut at the corner hardware store, adding another layer of security. With its stainless body and sealed cap, it’s built to handle rain, dirt, and long storage outdoors. Overall, it feels like a serious step up from the average coupler lock, and when you think about the value of the trailer and everything sitting on it, investing in something this tough makes a lot of sense.

I’ve seen plenty of trailer locks that look tough but could be taken off with an angle grinder in no time, so I’ll admit I was skeptical when Altor brought their ICON lock into the shop. After watching them actually go at it with power tools, I came away pretty impressed. The design uses thick cast steel with these raised fins, so even if you start grinding, you’re chewing through layers before you ever touch the core. They also built the lock face to spin if someone tries drilling, which just eats up the bit instead of the lock. On top of that, the keys are unique enough that you can’t just run to the hardware store and make extras. The stainless body and weather-sealed cap mean it holds up outside, which is huge for trailers that sit in lots or barns for months at a time. To me, it feels like a real step above the typical coupler lock and considering what you’ve got riding on your trailer, this is one of those cases where a tougher lock is worth it.

I’ve come across plenty of trailer locks that look tough but are no match for an angle grinder. So when Altor brought their ICON lock into the shop, I wasn’t sure it would be much different. They proved me wrong. I watched them slice right through a well-known coupler lock with a grinder during their demo here. I will not call out the brand, but you can see it in my video. When it came time to test the ICON, the grinder barely made progress. Its solid cast steel build and finned design make it extremely difficult to reach the core. On top of that, the lock face spins when a drill bit hits it, which just wears down the tool instead of opening the lock. The keys are designed so they cannot be copied at the hardware store, and the stainless body with its weather-sealed cap keeps out rust, dirt, and moisture. After seeing it in action, I walked away convinced this lock is a real upgrade over the typical coupler locks, and if your trailer hauls valuable equipment, the added security makes a lot of sense.

I like the lock. It's large and heavy and looks like it would be difficult to cut off. The lockpicking lawyer had a similar one on his show and liked it. The only downside I can see is that someone could just unbolt my trailer coupler and swap it out. For me the lock is worth the money for the extra peace of mind.

If you’re pulling a livestock trailer with a Buyers Products coupler, hauling equipment on a Demco cast coupler, or running a heavy work trailer with a Wallace Forge setup, you already know those couplers are built for hard use. The ICON AL98DQ lock is made to match that same toughness. I was impressed by how heavy and solid it feels, it’s a solid block of cast steel with a design that makes grinders and saws practically useless. The unique half-moon key system is harder to pick and won’t freeze up, and the stainless cap keeps out mud and grit when your trailer’s sitting in a pasture or parked at the jobsite.

by:

We love it. I can't imagine anybody being able to get that off the tongue.
